About The Institute

About

The Institute of Regional Studies was established in April 1997, by merging the Institute of Commercial History and the Institute of Industry and Management. Its establishment was along with the opening of Graduate School of Regional Policy Studies, Osaka University of Commerce, aiming to play a role in promoting 'area studies' in Kansai region. Our mission is to contribute to distinctive regional development by comprehensive and interdisciplinary area studies mainly on Kansai region in Japan, East and Southeast Asia.

Through various activities listed below, the Institute is disseminating research achievement.

  1. Research, survey and data collection
  2. Publication of the series of research books
  3. Annual publication of bulletin and newsletters
  4. Joint research with other research institutions
  5. Open seminar and workshops
  6. Extension course on business themes
  7. Biannual international symposium

History

1997
  • The Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) was established by merging the Institute of Commercial History and the Institute of Industry and Management.
1999
  • Publishing of 1st issue of the Institute's bulletin, "Region and Society."
  • Publishing of 1st volume of the book series.
2000
  • The 1st international symposium, "Asia in the 21st Century: Will Economic Growth Keep Up?" held at Osaka University of Commerce (OUC).
2001
  • The 2nd international symposium, "Economic Cooperation between North and South Korea and Economic Development in Gangwon-do," held at Kangwon National University (KNU), Korea.
2003
  • The 3rd international symposium, "Economic Globalization and Structure Adjustment in Asian Economy," held at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), China.
  • The 4th international symposium, "Market Economy and Corporate Management," held at OUC.
2004
  • The 1st open seminar, "Japanese Culture and Asia."
2005
  • The 5th international symposium, "Northeast Asia in the World Economy" held at KNU.
  • The 2nd open seminar, "East Asian Community and Northeast Asia."
  • The 6th international symposium, "Sustainable Economic Growth in East Asia," held at SUFE.
2006
  • The 3rd open seminar, "Rediscovery of Ancient Asia: To Overcome 'Datsu-A-Ron.'"
2007
  • The 4th open seminar, "Multilateral Framework in Northeast Asia and Order Formation Process after the End of Cold War."
2008
  • Joint open seminar under the auspices of Graduate School, OUC and IRS, "Current Rapid Economic Growth in India and Changing Rural Society."
  • The 5th open seminar, "Economy in Kyoto-Osaka Area in Modern History: Reevaluation of the Role."
2009
  • Memorial Seminar for the 60th Anniversary of OUC, (the 6th open seminar), "30 Years after Chinese Economic Reform: Where Do They Go?"
  • Memorial International Symposium for the 60th Anniversary of OUC, (the 7th international symposium), "Development of Chinese Economy and Social Changes: Based on Japan's Experiences and Lessons."
2010
  • The 7th open seminar, "Obama Administration and the Future of US-Asia Relationship."
2011
  • The 8th open seminar, "Changes in Production and Employment System in Korea after the Economic Crisis."
  • Progress of Economic Cooperation in East Asia and Japan to Be Left Behind."
2012
  • The 9th open seminar, "EU Integration and the Present World: History, Current Status and Future."
  • Joint extension course under the auspices of the Institute of Amusement Industry Studies, OUC and IRS, "Quick Understanding of Current Status of Industries in China." (Later, it was renamed and hosted only by IRS since 2013. This 2012 course is counted as the 1st course of 'the Public Lecture on Business Issues' as well.)
